What Does it Mean to Be "Regulated"?

In the whirlwind of modern life, we often hear about the importance of “staying calm” or “keeping it together”, and social media gurus have equated that with "regulation". But from a somatic perspective, regulation is so much more than simply not losing your cool. It’s about creating a harmonious and flexible connection between your body, mind, and emotions—a state where you feel grounded, capable, and present.

Being regulated means your nervous system is in a balanced state, able to flexibly respond to ups and downs. Imagine your body as a finely tuned instrument: when it’s regulated, you’re in tune, able to flow with the rhythm of life rather than fighting against it.

Here are some hallmarks of regulation:

  • Calm Alertness: You feel awake and aware, but not overwhelmed. There’s a sense of ease in your body, even when faced with challenges.

  • Emotional Resilience: Emotions come and go like waves; you feel them without being overtaken or stuck. You can embrace even tough emotions like sadness or anger without shutting them down.

  • Inner Connection: You can tune into your body’s signals—hunger, tiredness, tension—and respond with care.

  • Adaptability: Life throws curveballs, but you’re able to adjust without spiraling into stress or shutting down.

So, how do we cultivate this state? Through small, intentional practices that support the body’s natural capacity to self-regulate. The process of shifting toward this state of regulation is not as a fixed goal, but a dynamic process. Regulation is less about “getting it right” and more about listening to your body and responding with curiosity and compassion.

When we’re regulated, we can meet life with greater ease and authenticity. It’s not about perfection; it’s about learning to dance with life’s rhythms. And the beauty is, your body already has the wisdom to guide you there.
